SCAD student group hosts urban art installation
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Graduate students in Professor Jeanne Lambin’s Preservation Law and Advocacy class present “Art of the Law: Unlocking the Past, Protecting the Future,” an urban installation on March 4, 6-9 p.m. The event will feature various downtown locations in Savannah’s Historic District, at a reception and information station held in the vacant lot at 215 W. Broughton St.
The exhibit will be a multimedia educational outreach event, designed to illustrate principles and processes of law, as learned in the classroom. For each of the sites, students have partnered to explore the legal processes involved in identifying, navigating, or establishing historic properties. Topics include responsible infill and development, design review, African-American history in Savannah’s built environment, and the economics of responsible preservation.
The fourteen students are historic preservation and architecture graduate students at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Following eight weeks studying the complex legal processes associated with preservation, the students decided there need to be more concrete ways of understanding and conveying the ideas associated with historic issues.
